So Nicola, you’re the Practice Manager at Glasgow Medical Rooms, a private GP clinic in the centre of Glasgow?
Nicola:
Yes, that’s right.

Can you start by telling us a bit about the practice?
Nicola:
Sure. So Glasgow Medical Rooms was set up in 2016 by Dr Sheila O'Neill, a GP with over 20 years of experience in the NHS before moving into the private sector.
Health Prem:
And what was her motivation for setting up a private practice?
Nicola:
I think it was a mixture of things, but overall, she saw that there was a way to do things better, to take a fresh look at the model.
Working in the NHS, GPs are limited to 10-minute appointments, everything is rushed and there’s no time to spend with patients. Dr Sheila has said she still gets immense satisfaction helping people, but the NHS constraints wouldn’t allow her the time she wanted to spend on patient care.
Health Prem:
I think this is so common amongst NHS GPs, the time limit is frustrating. How many GPs do you have at Glasgow Medical Rooms?

Nicola:
In addition to Dr Sheila, we currently have four locum GPS that work on set days every week. Dr Fiona O’Donoghue is a GP and Menopause Specialist, Dr Astrid Bennet is a GP specialising in Dermatology (skin problems), Dr Olga Morton is a GP certified in Lifestyle Medicine, and GP Dr Julie Browning.

Do you have other health professionals available at your practice?
Nicola:
We offer a weekly service for physiotherapy, and we have a practice nurse and two advanced nurse practitioners.

Health Prem: What services do you currently offer?
Nicola:
We offer a range of GP Services including face-to-face consultations, telephone appointments, and home visits as well as GPs specialising in menopause, skin problems and lifestyle medicine.
We also do health screenings and medicals, vaccination and travel clinics, and we have onsite diagnostics for tests such as blood tests, and ECGs.
In addition to our GP services, we also offer onsite sessions with a clinical psychologist (when referred by a GP) and support businesses with our occupational health services.
Appointment costs & health insurance
Health Prem:
How much is an appointment at Glasgow Medical Rooms?
Nicola:
It depends on the length of the appointment. The first 30-minute appointment is £150. If the patient needs less time for subsequent appointments, we offer 20-minute appointments for £125.

Do you work with health insurance?
Nicola:
At the moment, you pay at the practice and then claim it back from your insurance.

What about waiting times? Do you offer same or next-day appointments?
Nicola:
Yes, we offer both same and next-day appointments. We’ve also just implemented online booking on our website which makes it even easier to make an appointment and helps us by giving us the information we need before your consultation.

And what are your opening hours?
Nicola:
We’re open Monday to Friday, 9 to 5:30.
