About Dermal Clinic

Health Prem:

Hi, Jackie. Nice to meet you. Would you like to start by telling us a bit about Dermal Clinic? What is your mission? What do you do?

Jackie:

Of course. So, Dermal Clinic is a medical aesthetics practice. We have been in operation for nearly two decades, and we offer a full medical service meaning our focus is on delivering the best outcomes for patients using proven treatments.

Health Prem:

Can you explain this a bit more?

Jackie:

So, basically, we’re not going to take on new fads until we've got the research behind it to make sure it's evidence-based and safe for our clients. The medical side is really important to us, which is why we're a registered clinic with Healthcare Improvement Scotland.

Treatments offered by Dermal Clinic

Health Prem:

What kind of treatments do you offer at Dermal Clinic?

Jackie:

We specialise in a variety of aesthetic treatments, and treatments for skin conditions such as acne and rosacea. The newest kid on the block that has been added to our service is medical weight loss injections, which I'm sure you’re very familiar with.

Health Prem:

Yes, there’s a lot about them in the news at the moment.

Jackie:

Yeah, but we're slightly different from other services. It was on the news last week about how the Pharmaceutical Council is clamping down on online pharmacies prescribing weight loss injections using an online questionnaire without ever seeing the patient. Now they can only be prescribed after a face-to-face consultation or with GP support. We were already doing that.

All of our assessments are face-to-face consultations. We also do blood screening to assess your clinical health before prescribing weight loss injections and body composition analysis so that we can see how much visceral fat there is and check your muscle density.

Health Prem:

That’s great. It seems like the demand for weight loss injections has gone crazy, and people are buying them when they're not even overweight. Obviously, they can have health risks, side effects, etc. Do you think weight loss injections have become an easy fix for obesity?

Jackie:

That's an interesting perception, but actually it's not. This is not a case of doing an injection and the fat melts away. You have to follow a sensible, low-calorie diet. The injection works by turning off the link between the gut and the head.

Health Prem:

So they’re more of an aid to weight loss, as opposed to a weight loss miracle cure.

Jackie:

Exactly.

Health Prem:

And so apart from the weight loss injections, what other treatments do you offer at Dermal Clinic?

Jackie:

We deal with so many different things, for example, helping people with acne or rosacea, botulism toxin treatments, and dermal fillers. A really popular treatment that we’ve been doing for a long time now is sperm facials. This is a treatment that uses polynucleotides and stem cell technology to restore skin health.

Staff at Dermal Clinic, Edinburgh

Health Prem:

And what about your staff at Dermal Clinic?

Jackie:

I’m a nurse practitioner and clinical director at the clinic. We have another two doctors who work in the practice, and we also have aestheticians who carry out most of the weekly treatments.

Health Prem:

Do you offer video or telephone appointments?

Jackie:

We don’t do video or telephone appointments. Everything is face-to-face because we feel that it’s so important to get to know you and meet you in person to fully assess what you need.

It’s also important for us to share our expertise with our clients without the pressure to pay for unnecessary treatments. We offer a free 30-minute consultation which is something that's very well received by our patients.

Opening hours & pricing

Health Prem:

Jackie, what are your opening hours?

Jackie:

We are open until 8 pm, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and until five on Thursdays.

Health Prem:

How much is a standard appointment?

Jackie:

The first consultation is free of charge, but after that, it depends on what treatments you have. In some cases, we may not recommend any treatment, which is fine.

Health Prem:

Lastly, why should patients choose Dermal Clinic?

Jackie:

We're trusted. I mean, our Google reviews speak for themselves. We've got a really strong ethical reputation and we're not just here to sell treatments. We're here to support people and guide them appropriately and safely.

Health Prem:

That’s great, Jackie. Thanks so much for speaking to us. Is there anything else you’d like to add before we go?

Patient safety in the aesthetics industry

Jackie:

One thing I’d like to bring up is that in December 2024, the Scottish Government opened a consultation seeking further regulations on non-surgical cosmetic procedures (NSCPs).

It aims to improve patient safety by introducing a regulatory framework and proper licensing and addresses concerns about unregulated practices performing these types of procedures. This is something that we as a practice feel strongly about and we have always put patient safety above everything else.

Health Prem:

And this move by the Scottish Government is to protect the safety of patients and ensure patients receive the best care from qualified professionals?

Jackie:

Exactly. Currently, the aesthetics industry is like the Wild West. There is no regulation, apart from having to be registered with Healthcare Improvement Scotland. The practitioner doesn’t have to be medically qualified. There’s also no age limit for these treatments, unlike in England where you have to be over 18.

The consultation closes on February 14th, so let’s see what the results of the consultation are.

Health Prem:
